I’m in Whistler, BC at the Devinci dealer show, and there’s a bicycle here that, while not officially launched yet, has just been previewed to attending dealers. I’m told that no one has posted about it on the internet yet, and that this is a global exclusive on this exciting new bike. You have to see it in motion to appreciate it, so here’s a “blink” animation of it:
Blink animation of the new Devinci Newton!
So what’s exciting about it? It has lights in the frame and the fork of the bike! These lights are powered by a super-low resistance generator hub in the front wheel. The cabling is all internal, using the same successful (not to mention trouble-free) internal cable routing that Devinci first rolled out in their hybrids in 2011. It uses LEDs, which are resistant to burning out, and capacitors which (unlike batteries) virtually never need to be replaced. In other words, these lights should work for a very long time with no maintenance at all.
Even if you like having lights on your handlebar, seatpost, helmet or what have you, more lights are always better for nighttime commuting. In the same way that cars have daytime running lights, having lights on your bike during the daytime could also improve your cycling safety. Finally, I know I’ve experienced times where my lights died, got lost, broke, were forgotten at home, or I stayed out later than I anticipated and I simply didn’t bring them on the ride. With the Newton, you’ll never not have light. The capacitors allow for them to blink for a time at stop lights, too.
This patented Devinci design will be rolling out to two models for 2014, and may come to other models over time. Watch for the official launch for pricing and full specifications! We’ll be talking more about these bikes, and will be getting them in our store as soon as they’re available.
