Environment/Social

Environmental Commitment

Our environmental and social commitment extends further than selling bicycles. We reuse and recycle wherever possible. In addition to paper and cardboard, we also recycle steel, aluminum, soft plastic, hard plastic, tires, tubes, and styrofoam. We have provided used wheels to crab fishers for building crab traps and punctured tubes to farmers and others for re-use. In 2014 we recycled 29 bags of soft plastic. We’re always trying to do better for the environment!

Recycling Bikes

We are happy to look at trading in pre-owned bicycles towards new bicycles here. Trade-ins become part of our used bike program. We tune and clean the bicycles completely, then make them available for sale. This helps keep quality bikes in wider circulation, as well as often making the purchase of a quality bike more affordable. We accept donations of any bicycle, and will do our best to either get them to a good home or recycle them properly.

Canadian Content

Devinci also changed their carbon manufacture for environmental reasons. Our two main bike brands are Kona and Devinci, both Canadian bicycle companies. Devinci recently estimated that they build 30% of their frames in Canada and assemble 80% of their bikes in Canada. Both Kona and Devinci have been around for over 20 years selling some of the best bikes available in Canada, or anywhere else in the world.

Supporting BC Suppliers

We favour local BC suppliers for the parts, accessories, and apparel we sell. This not only supports BC-based companies, but helps the environment by reducing the distance the items have to travel to reach our store and, ultimately, our customers.

Supporting Local Business

We support small, independent local businesses when possible. We purchase our office supplies from a local office supply company, one that also has a strong environmental commitment and has achieved both ISO 14001:2004 and GO GREEN certification. Our computer equipment was purchased from an independent computer store. Even the shop shirts you will see staff members wearing were prepared for us by an independent local supplier. We also pair with the Market on Millstream to help provide prizes for their customers.

Supporting the Local Community

For decades we have supported the local community in numerous ways, including ongoing membership in the local Chamber, financial support for the South Island Mountain Bike Society (SIMBS), and donations to both Bike to Work Week and to local fundraisers supporting children and student.
